Ivrea can be easily reached either by car, via the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway with a dedicated exit, or by the regional railway network that connects Turin and Aosta directly. Ivrea station is located near the urban centre and has local bus connections to the Canavese area. A road transport network is also available to the main surrounding localities; the nearest airport is Turin Caselle, from where one continues by train or bus to the city.

Introduction

Ivrea, located in the metropolitan city of Turin, represents the historical-geographical capital of Canavese and is strategically positioned between the Piedmont plain and the entrance to the Valle d'Aosta. The territory is mainly developed in an inland hilly area, characterised by modest elevations and the passage of the Dora Baltea river, which marks the urban and rural landscape. The built-up area unfolds amidst glimpses of medieval architecture, Roman remains and modern complexes linked to 20th-century industrialisation.

Description

Founded in the 5th century B.C. by the Salassi, Ivrea became a Roman colony under the name of Eporedia, placed to guard the route to the Alpine valleys. Over the centuries, the city acquired a central role in the conflicts and trade flows between northern and southern Piedmont, to the point of distinguishing itself as the seat of medieval marques and counties. A distinctive element of the city's identity is the 'Industrial City', included in the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to the legacy left by Olivetti, a pioneering company in the local social and urban evolution, led by figures such as Camillo and Adriano Olivetti.
The historic centre reveals cobbled streets, ancient churches and evidence of fortifications, while cultural life is expressed in events such as the historic Ivrea Carnival, punctuated by the famous Battle of the Oranges, a ritual that catalyses the participation of the population and visitors. There is no shortage of musical and theatrical events and exhibitions dedicated to architecture and innovation, reinforcing Ivrea's status as an important cultural centre.
The surrounding environment offers rolling hills, glacial lakes near the Serra Morenica and hiking routes that connect the city to the neighbouring valleys and the morainic amphitheatre. Several scenic walks and cycling and walking routes enhance the naturalistic dimension of the area, but the local food and wine riches are equally well known, with typical products reflecting the Piedmontese tradition.
