Introduction

A municipality in the lower Valle d'Aosta, located on the right orographic slope of the Dora Baltea river, a short distance from the village of Bard. With this municipality, in fact, it has always shared the historical events linked to the seigniory of the same name, which then passed into the hands of the Vallaise family, and from them to other noble families, even those not from Valle d'Aosta. Under the fascist dictatorship, it also suffered administrative reunification, which was promptly cancelled in March 1946.

Description

The most suggestive hypothesis on the origin of the place name goes back to pre-Indo-European languages and to the word onno-onna, meaning water. In fact, the municipal territory is heavily influenced by the presence of two rivers, the Dora Baltea and its tributary Ayasse, which descends from Champorcher. Over the centuries, and up until the recent past (October 2000), floods were recurrent and the rural landscape was dotted with the characteristic murgères, stone walls with the function of partial embankment.
From an economic point of view, the town boasts an ancient industrial vocation, favoured by the wide plain that surrounds it and its proximity to Canavese: in fact, the first documents that testify to metallurgical activities date back as far as the 14th century (obviously, one cannot speak of industrial activities!), in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were several settlements, while the twentieth century saw real development, thanks also to the construction in 1914 of the first hydroelectric power station fed by penstocks.
