Dortoir Retempio

Access

To reach the dortoir, you can drive to Pontboset and then continue on foot along the mule track leading to Crest. Alternatively, you can reach Crest (1096 m) by car and from there continue along a well-marked path, part of Alta Via 2. The path follows the Brenve stream and, after an impressive waterfall, climbs up a stone staircase that seems to lead to paradise. Afterwards, the path crosses a forest of majestic beech trees and arrives at the Dortoir, located right in front of the Sanctuary (1470 m).

Introduction

The Dortoir Retempio is an accommodation facility located in Pontboset, in the picturesque Champorcher Valley, next to the buildings of the alpine pasture of the same name and opposite the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Visitation. During the summer season, which coincides with the alpine grazing period, the hut remains open to welcome hikers. 

Description

It is located along Alta Via 2, an itinerary that crosses the southern part of the Aosta Valley and allows you to explore peaks over 3,000 metres, such as the Rosa dei Banchi. From here, you can continue on to the Colle Pussuy (or Pousseuil, 2213 m) via the Alpe Buriana (1961 m) and the Valsomma alpine pastures (1716 m), or head towards the Crest refuge and connect to the better-known paths leading to the Dondena refuge.

The panorama from the Dortoir is breathtaking, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Dames de Challand and the Rosa dei Banchi group. Particularly remarkable is the view of the chain stretching from Cima Bronze to Ponton del Camoscio, with the majestic Bec delle Strie in the centre. From a naturalistic point of view, the area is rich in diverse alpine environments, ranging from chestnut and coniferous forests to meadows where cattle and flocks of goats and sheep of endangered local breeds graze. Being located in the Mont Avic Park, on the border with the Gran Paradiso Park, Dortoir offers an excellent opportunity to observe a rich wild fauna and flora, the result of the preservation of ecosystems linked to traditional farming activities.
