Introduction

Corippo is a small village on the left flank of the Verzasca Valley, reached by a narrow carriage road.

Description

It is the village with the smallest number of resident inhabitants (17!!) in the whole of Switzerland. The first written record of this 'Culipo' village is in a will from 1224. In 1411, it was listed as one of the communes subject to Amedeo VIII of Savoy, like the other Verzasca lands. In the 16th century, it was part of the vicinia of Vogorno together with San Bartolomeo, Vogorno grande, Vogorno piccolo and Fontobbia, which in practice encompassed the entire lower valley excluding the lands of Mergoscia. Between 1803 and 1822 it was referred to as the municipality of Vogorno-Corippo after which date it became a separate municipal entity. Later was the separation of the patriciate, the first documents of this new entity date from 1885.
