Description
The name 'Chenal' may derive from the French-Provençal word for a small canal or furrow, a probable reference to the morphology of the territory and the presence of watercourses or historical canals. The origins of the village are intertwined with those of Montjovet and its territory, which saw settlements as far back as Roman times and played a strategic role as a crossing point between the plain and the Alpine passes.
In geological terms, the Chenal area is characterised by rocky terrain and moderate slopes, surrounded by chestnut and oak forests. The location of the village, exposed to the sun for much of the year, makes it a particularly suitable place for mountain agriculture, with evidence of traditional cultivation still visible in the terraces.
To reach Chenal, one can start from Montjovet and follow a series of secondary roads that gradually ascend towards the village. Hikers can take advantage of a network of trails that wind through forests and meadows, with varying levels of difficulty, suitable for both experienced walkers and families looking for a walk immersed in nature. The trails lead to vantage points offering breathtaking views of the central valley of the Dora Baltea and the mountains that frame it.
The village, although small and quiet, has a history rich in local traditions. These include ancient village festivals and orally passed down tales of mythical figures and mountain stories. Characters linked to the area include artisans and farmers who have contributed to keeping the community's traditions and cultural identity alive.
