Introduction

Cervarolo is located at 707 metres above sea level in a sunny position protected from the west winds; it was an autonomous municipality and is now a hamlet of Varallo, while from a religious point of view it belongs to the diocese of Novara.

Description

It has several agglomerations, Upper and Lower Villa, Molino, Prati, Sassello, Solivo and Volta, whose name refers to the use that was made of the land in the past, and in particular in the Middle Ages, the period to which all Valsesian settlements date back. The village was in a very important position, on the communication route between the Strona valley and Valsesia, even though it was set back from the valley itself. In the second half of the 19th century, the population numbered 1,200, the men emigrating to France and Switzerland to work in construction, the women to Lomellina to gather hemp. The parish church, built in stone like most of the houses, is dedicated to San Michele, enlarged and renovated in the Baroque period, and is situated on the plain below the village.
