Introduction
Andorno Micca is a Piedmontese municipality located in the province of Biella, nestled in the Cervo Valley and surrounded by the Biellese Pre-Alps. The locality, which today has about 3,400 inhabitants, boasts a long historical and cultural tradition, having been over the centuries the nerve centre of the Cervo Valley and the hub of craft and mercantile activities that have marked its identity.
Description
The territory covers an area of about 12 km², at an altitude of 544 metres above sea level, in a typical mountain and valley setting, where the course of the Cervo stream marks the geographical boundary and the landscape alternates between wide alluvial plains and steep slopes. The richness of the environment is evidenced by the presence of numerous hamlets, woods and paths, ideal for those who love to immerse themselves in nature and undertake excursions among historic hamlets, small rural churches and ancient stone bridges. The origins of Andorno Micca date back to Roman times, as testified by the place name and historical finds, but it is in the Middle Ages that the village became important: in documents dating back to the 10th century we find the donation by Ottone I and the succession of investitures that saw the village linked first to the Counts of Cavaglià and later to the archdiocese of Vercelli. The historic centre had a strategic mercantile function for centuries, contending with Biella for the supremacy of the weekly market, until Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy sanctioned Andorno's autonomy and commercial rights. The commune's name pays tribute to Pietro Micca, the emblem of Piedmontese courage during the siege of Turin in 1706, whose birth is disputed between Andorno and Sagliano Micca, both of which are linked to the figure of the hero.
Andorno Micca is also distinguished by its economic fabric, historically dominated by crafts (footwear, wood, iron) and leather tanning. In the 19th century, the locality hosted renowned hydrotherapy establishments, an attraction for those seeking wellness and care. Even today, the town is known for the production of Ratafià, a black cherry liqueur made according to ancient recipes, and keeps alive historical and craft traditions handed down through generations. Cultural life comes alive during the patron saint's festivities dedicated to San Lorenzo (10 August), with festivals and celebrations involving the various hamlets and the parish church, embellished by the works of the painter Bernardino Galliari, founder of a dynasty of artists renowned throughout Piedmont.
The range of excursions reflects Andorno Micca's alpine vocation: well-kept paths, historic mule tracks and panoramic views invite visitors to discover the beauty of the Cervo Valley. The area is a reference point for trekkers and enthusiasts, thanks to the variety of routes that range from walks in the woods to itineraries to peaks and refuges, offering unique views over the Biellese basin and the crown of the Alps. Local curiosities and legends add charm to the itineraries, making them stages of history and living memory.
