Almagellerhütte

Introduction

The Almagellerhütte is located at an altitude of 2,894 metres on a panoramic terrace overlooking the Saas Valley and offers a sweeping view of the Weissmies group and the peaks at the head of the Saastal. Located on the territory of the municipality of Saas-Almagell in the Canton of Valais, it is one of the best known and most popular facilities of the Swiss Alpine Club in the region. The hut belongs to the SAC Niesen section and is a strategic foothold for numerous mountaineering ascents, such as those to the Sonnighorn, Portjengrat and the aforementioned Weissmies, as well as an important stage on the Valais High Route.

Description

The building, modern but harmoniously embedded in the landscape of rocks and high-altitude pastures, is managed by Hugo Anthamatten. It has 120 beds, distributed in functional and well-maintained dormitories, and a winter room that can accommodate up to 9 persons during the closed season. The building is equipped with the main amenities of high altitude, including the availability of running water. Lighting and the possibility of recharging electronic devices are provided, while the wifi connection may be limited depending on conditions and the period. There is the traditional hut book, where hikers can leave evidence of their passage.

The Almagellerhütte usually opens in July, August and September, which coincides with the favourable season for hiking and climbing the surrounding glaciers. The hut can be reached on foot from Saas-Almagell in about three hours, along a well-marked path through sparse forests and alpine meadows, offering sweeping views of the valley below and the Mischabel massif. The surrounding area is home to sections of particular geological and moraine interest, bearing witness to the ancient glacial phases that shaped the Saastal.
