Introduction

Agarn is a small municipality in the canton of Valais, in the district of Leuk, in south-western Switzerland. Situated at an altitude of approximately 620 metres on an alluvial cone, it lies on the southern slope of the Rhone valley and covers an area of 7.65 km². The territory is framed by an alpine environment, where the highest elevation is the Bella Tola peak, which reaches 3025 metres.

Description

The landscape is characterised by mountain slopes, forests and sweeping views of the valley, making Agarn a discreet starting point for hiking itineraries and for discovering the natural peculiarities typical of central Valais. From the centre of the village, the peaks of the Valais Alps and the Rhone Valley are visible; in addition to the river, the area is home to streams and small seasonal watercourses that are used to irrigate the vineyards and surrounding fields.
The history of Agarn is intertwined with that of the Leuk region and Upper Valais: the first records of the village date back to the Middle Ages, when it played a strategic role along the communication routes linking the various Valais 'degagne' (decanies). In the following centuries, the administrative structure was consolidated with the model of the patrician commune, giving rise to a system of participatory management of resources and land, still active today and guardian of the local historical memory. Among the most significant buildings is the parish church of the Madonna del Rosario, dating back to the post-1923 period.
The economy of Agarn has always reflected the agro-pastoral vocation of the Alpine valleys: vineyards, small livestock farms, vegetable gardens and the cultivation of meadows for fodder are among the main activities. There is no shortage of typical Swiss handicrafts and services for the community and visitors, while the Alpine environment favours hiking and nature tourism.
In terms of culture, traditions are kept alive thanks to religious festivals and small village events. The official language is German, while the oral heritage includes dialect terms and stories handed down in the Agarner community. Patronal festivals and festivals linked to the agricultural seasons punctuate social life, accompanied by typical local recipes and Valaisan cuisine.
