Introduction

The Montozzo “Angiolino Bozzi” Mountain Hut, at the foot of Punta di Montozzo, takes its name from one of the first soldiers to fall at Montozzo during the “White War”, fought from 1915 onwards amongst peaks, rocks, snow and glaciers, along the borderline that stretched from the Stelvio, through the Adamello, to Lake Garda. At the refuge, formerly a finance corps barracks, trenches, military camps, watchtowers and firing positions were built – and have recently been renovated – to support the Tonale front. It was in this area that Alpine troops from Brescia, Bergamo and Abruzzo lived and, sadly, died whilst attempting to capture the Albiolo. In June 1915, Cesare Battisti also arrived at Montozzo; in a letter to his wife, he described the Alpine troops as “brothers rather than comrades-in-arms”.
