Val Maroz, from Casaccia

Introduction

Beautiful valley with very wide slopes that breaks away from the Bregaglia and runs parallel to it towards the northwest, separated from it by peaks such as Piz Cam and Piz Duan that are well known to ski mountaineers. It lies near the source of the Maira (a river that, having crossed the border, takes the name Mera, and then flows into Lake Como at Piani di Spagna) along the historic Roman and medieval route of the Septimerpass (Septimerpass or Pas da Sett).

Description

At the tiny cemetery of Casaccia 1458 m, next to the small ski lift, climb up the forest track that winds its way up the wooded slope dominated by Piz Lunghin and Piz dal Sasc. At times it can be convenient to move up the ascent by taking advantage of the footpath that cuts a few bends. Having reached the glacial step of the valley at about 1750 m, ignoring the tracks for the hydroelectric intake works, we penetrate the wide valley at length. On the left you pass the Alpe Maroz Dora (= da fora = from outside) 1799 m and on the right the stream coming from the narrow cleft of the Val dal Sett (Aua dal Sett). Continue along the bottom of the valley on the right of the frozen Maira, gaining height without jolting: at the top of a hump, before the descent to a small bridge over the river, you will find - covered in snow - the Maroz Dent (= from inside) farmhouse 2035 m.
Descent along the outward route. It is possible to avoid the last hairpin bends of the forest track by crossing a dense alder forest.
