Introduction

This hike does not present any difficulty in the ascent and allows, by means of a very scenic route, to reach a wide pass that lies between the peaks of the Magehorn on the right, with which it shares the ascent route, and the more imposing Galehorn on the left and divides the Simplon valley with the Nanztal. Already during the ascent, one can enjoy the splendid views of the peaks of the Simplon area, with a beautiful view from the top of the old hospice, and once at the pass, one is confronted by the beautiful mountain chain that descends from the Mattwaldhorn down to the Visp plain.

Description

From the car park, scrape along the road until you reach a small descent that leads to the clearly visible Nideralp huts below (1815 m), which you soon reach and cross in the direction of a small bridge that crosses the stream. Remaining on the left, walk towards a sparse forest that stretches over a marked ridge and that you climb up, zigzagging at the steepest points; when the slope decreases a little and you come out into more open spaces, move to the right, aiming for the evident rocky bastion of Hotosse. Pass underneath it with a long, non-exposed and very scenic traverse, after which you keep to the left and climb a steep slope that passes through an area somewhat exposed to a few small avalanches, then heading towards the bumps of the wide col, which is soon reached.
