Berrio Theme Path
Introduction
Short, scenic and entertaining walk, the first part of the path followed by refugees and persecuted people to Switzerland over the Cornet and Fenetre passes, with the help of the Castiglioni partisan band, as narrated in Albino Ferrari's book, 'Il vuoto alle spalle'.
Description
From the car park in front of the Ollomont town hall, follow the signs for the Cornet pass and the Breuson pass. Climb steeply between the houses until you first meet an inter-farm track, which you cross again further up. Then leave the path and go left along the cross-country track that crosses a small bridge and reaches the ski lift fields. At a hairpin bend, before the cross-country road begins to descend, you meet the sign for the start of the trail. You enter the forest, meet a fork in the road and continue to the right, passing above the arrival point of the ski lift and under a wall secured by a wire mesh against falling stones. You come to the first irons, turn left to climb a steep gully with the help of metal steps and handholds. At the end of which you reach a grassy ridge with a beautiful view of Velan Mountain. After a short traverse, the path ascends the ridge and in a picturesque setting, the huts of the Berrio desot alpine pasture are reached. Further on, the white scrub of alpe Berrio damon can be seen. Further on, on the left, a path leads to the cross-country road that climbs up from Ollomont, which you can either return to or continue on to reach the same cross-country road further on, near the Berrio damon alpine pasture, from where you can continue to the Cornet col on the left or to the Breuson col, hiking itineraries on a marked path.
