Introduction

One of the most important centres of winter tourism in Valle d'Aosta, with its 150 km of downhill slopes (its ski area is connected with a single ski pass to that of the French resort of La Rosière) and five cross-country skiing rings.

Description

The area was already frequented in Roman times, as a military road passed through it, crossing today's Piccolo San Bernardo pass to reach Gaul. To this pass, the town owes its fortune but also the heavy tribute of blood paid throughout history as a natural frontier location between the Italian possessions of the Savoy and the advancing French armies. Under the fascist regime and its autarchy, La Thuile became a mining centre, exploiting coal deposits. This condition continued even after the war, so much so that the village reached 1400 inhabitants; then came the inexorable decline of the Italian mining industry with the consequent closure of the mines in 1966. Since then, the town's tourist vocation has been developing rapidly.
