On 18 October 1914, Raymond Lambert, a Swiss mountain guide, was born in Geneva. In May 1952, together with the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, he attempted the ascent ofEverest via the south face: the pair came to a halt at over 8,500 metres – the highest point reached on the mountain – after their oxygen apparatus failed. In 1938, he lost all his toes to frostbite on Mont Blanc du Tacul.
