On 19 June 1957, Marcus Schmuck and Fritz Wintersteller made the first ascent of Skil Brum, in pure alpine style. Setting off from Broad Peak base camp at 4,950 metres, they camped at 6,060 metres, reached the summit the following day, then camped again at 6,060 metres before returning to base camp the next morning. The entire ascent, from base camp to base camp, took 53 hours – a surprisingly short time for a major Himalayan ascent at that time.
