Marcel Rüedi, a mountaineer, was born on 1 November 1938 in Winterthur, Switzerland. He climbed ten eight-thousanders, including Dhaulagiri (1980) and, in 1983 with Erhard Loretan and Jean-Claude Sonnenwyl, the three main peaks of the Gasherbrum range in fifteen days; in 1986, together with Peter Habeler, he became the first Swiss to summit Cho Oyu. He died that same year on Makalu, during an expedition with Krzysztof Wielicki.
