On 12 August 1863, the guides Melchior Anderegg, Jean-Pierre Cacha and Peter Perren led a group of British climbers comprising F. Crauford Grove, William E. Hall, Reginald S. Macdonald, Montagu Woodmass on the first ascent of the Dent d’Herens (4,171 m) in the Pennine Alps. The first ascent followed shortly after an attempt on the summit led by Edward Whymper, Jean-Antoine Carrel and Luc Meynet.
The route taken by the first climbers is essentially the current standard route, starting from the Aosta Hut.
