On 25 October 1959, Sadao Hojo, Tetsuro Terahata, Dawa Thondup Sherpa and Pasang Temba Sherpa became the first to reach the summit of Shalbachum (6,669 m) in the Langtang Himal, Nepal, ascending via the south-west ridge. The Japanese expedition, led by T. Yamada, had previously attempted Langtang Lirung. The lead team was stranded for two days by a snowstorm before reaching the summit.
