Manaslu: first ascent by a woman

The first ascent by women was achieved by a Japanese expedition led by Kyoto Sato. On 4 May 1974, the mountaineers Naoko Nakaseko, Masako Uchida and Mieko Mori, together with Jambu Sherpa, reached the summit via the normal route. They had previously attempted the ascent via the East Ridge. Sadako Suzuki, a member of a second summit team, lost her life on 5 May following a fall between Camps 4 and 5.

The ascent of Manaslu also marked the first ascent of an eight-thousander by women, followed the following year by Everest and Gasherbrum II.
