On 19 April 1940, the Scottish mountaineer Dougal Haston was born in Currie, near Edinburgh. In 1966, together with Jörg Lehne, Günther Strobel, Roland Votteler and Siegfried Hupfauer, he made the first direct ascent of the north face of the Eiger; in 1970, he climbed the south face of Annapurna with Don Whillans; in 1975, with Doug Scott, he made the first ascent of the south-west face of Everest.
